Mission
Creek Greenway Trail is one
of the most visited recreation trails in the community of Kelowna,
BC. The Greenway Trail is 17 - 22 kilometres long. The trail explores
along the shores of Mission Creek passing through many eco systems
while exploring canyons, wetlands, forests, ponds and hoodoos.
The Greenway Trail is popular for hiking, biking,
jogging, rollerblading, birdwatching and dog walking in the summer
months. During the winter months, after the snow has fallen, the
trail morphs into a cross country ski and snowshoeing route. At
no time during the year are motor vehicles permitted on the trail.
The first section of the trail, from Ziprick
Road to Lakeshore Road, is 7 kilometres long and is considered
an easy grade trail with very little elevation hiking. This section
of the trail is ideal for all ages and fitness levels. Information
signs, viewing benches and viewpoints are found along this section
of the trail. Highlights on the trail include the Hall Road Ponds,
Benvoulin Woods, Casorso Wetlands and the Father Pandosy Mission.
The second section of the trail, KLO Creek to
Ziprick Road, is 9 kilometres and is more challenging with some
elevation hiking. The trail is narrow in many sections, crossing
over creeks, exploring forests and canyons while walking up switchbacks
and stairs. Along the trail are resting benches, information signs
and some spectacular sightseeing. The main highlights along this
route include the canyon views and Layer Cake Mtn. in the Scenic
Canyon Regional Park.
The Greenway Trail passes through Mission
Creek Regional Park. For many, the park is the half way point
of the Greenway Trail. There are many access points to the trail
starting from a number of residential streets in Kelowna. But
most access the trail from one of the paved designated parking
lots found on the trail.
