Lake Recreation Site is a small
remote boating, fishing, birding, and canoeing destination lake
in the summer located in the back country wilderness forests behind
the small community of Winfield, BC in Lake Country. The recreation
site is one of many lakes in the area.
The network of lakes in the region all are accessed
by a larger network of gravel forest service roads. The same gravel
road to Beaver Lake continues to other lakes like Lost
Lake, Island Lake, Doreen
Lake and Loon Lake.
It is these same gravel roads that become cross
country ski, snowmobile and snowshoe routes in the winter months
after the snow has fallen. And in the summer atvs and dirt bikes
travel the roads to get to and from trails leading even deeper
into the forests to more remote lakes not accessible by 4x4 vehicle.
The recreation campground is located on the shores
of Beaver Lake. It is a first come first serve campground. The
campsites are private, small, on a hill and include picnic tables
and fire pits. There are some pit toilets nearby.
In the summer months the campground is busier
than others in the area because it is the first one in the chain
of lakes. The campground is a pack in-pack out wilderness site.
Self maintenance is key, so please be clean and respect each other.
Be early for a camping spot.
There is a small area on the shoreline set aside
for a boat launch. The shoreline is often lined with small boats
and canoes. Beaver Lake is the attraction here for many. Trolling
and fly fishing for stocked Rainbow Trout is the prize for most.
In the winter, some arrive at the lake by snowmobile to ice fish.
Be advised the shoreline is very small and there
is no real beach area. But it does provide a complete view of
Beaver Lake and an opportunity for birdwatching. On our visit
we spotted birds on the lake like loons and herons.
The access road to the campground is downhill,
narrow and very rough. The turn around at the bottom is not RV
friendly. Large vehicles do not attempt to access this campground
or boat launch.
When traveling the gravel roads, always be aware
of oncoming vehicles as dust limits visibility and rocks fly.
Slow down as many corners are blind corners. Keep your head up
for free range cows which sometimes decide to graze on the road.
Always have headlights on when traveling the gravel forest service
roads during, both, day and night.
How to Get to Beaver
Lake Recreation Site: Travel
Highway #97 north of Kelowna, BC to the community of Winfield
in Lake Country. From the highway in Winfield turn east on Beaver
Lake Road. Continue driving straight. The paved road turns to
gravel. Continue down the gravel road for 16 kilometres (9 mi.)
following switchbacks leading to a resort.
Prior to the resort is a gravel road to the left.
Take this gravel road over a bridge to the campsite. Look for
a small access road on the right to the recreation site. It is
narrow, down hill and rough. No large vehicles. There is parking
available on the main gravel road prior to the entrance and you
can walk down.
