Summerland,
British Columbia is a small
community in the Central Okanagan Valley surrounded by fields
rich with wine culture, orchards and history. The fertile soil
in the region produces many high quality wines (both red and
white) and orchards producing plums, pears and apples.
The community
of Summerland rests on a hill high above Okanagan Lake. The
downtown core is colorful and
very European. The buildings are painted in pastel colours and
built to "Old England" heritage style specifications.
The streets are lined with art shops, retail stores and coffee
houses... some with outdoor patios.
Summerland provides many other
amenities a traveler requires like accommodations, restaurants,
gas stations, repair services, banks, ATMs, grocery stores,
internet, laundromat and medical services. The community is
in close proximity to Penticton
(10 minute drive) where there are more services available.
Summer activities enjoyed when
in Summerland include hiking, water skiing, sailing, boating,
railway tours, wine tours, swimming, picnicking, golfing, kayaking
and canoeing. Some of the sandy beach parks in the region include
Sun Oka Park and Okanagan
Lake Park.
Hiking trails in the Summerland
region worth a look include the Peach
Orchard Loop Trail and the hike up to the peak of Giants
Head Mountain. There is also the Kettle Valley Steam Railway
(KVR) which draws many visitors to the region for the opportunity
to witness the live outdoor play, put on by local actors, reenacting
the "Great Train Robbery".
